Which seat your child needs
Seat limits come from the manufacturer's label, so give dispatch your child's age, weight and height. As a guide:
- Rear-facing infant carrier: newborns and babies, typically to about 35 lbs
- Convertible seat: rear- or forward-facing, typically about 5 to 65 lbs
- High-back booster: children who have outgrown a harness, typically about 40 to 100 lbs, until the adult belt fits
California law
California requires children under 8, or under 4 feet 9 inches, to ride in an appropriate child restraint in a rear seat, and children under 2 to ride rear-facing unless they weigh 40 lbs or more or are 40 inches or taller (checked with California DMV and NHTSA guidance, August 29, 2026). The parent or guardian confirms the seat is right for the child and checks the final fit.
